I just watched a news clip about this year’s graduation ceremony at West Point. The ceremony was elaborate, and the accomplishment of graduating from one of the world’s elite institutions is impressive.  Those fortunate few have one thing in common… every one of them will have a career at graduation.

And the rest of America’s 2013 graduates?  Millions of them now hold a degree, but with little or no experience some are now challenged to find a job in their field…and not always sure what their field is.

If you like national economics and conflicting signals, April’s your month. After a stumble in March, April U.S. economic reports show a very mixed bag of results.

First, the good news:

  • National unemployment figures (as currently measured) dipped to 7.5%.
  • The stock market is consistently setting record highs.
  • Gold prices have dropped 17% this year, and that usually means that economic confidence is up.

Sorry, now the bad news:

It’s Monday.  What’s your frame of mind this morning?

If you’re in job transition, a full range of emotions accompanies every new week. The question is, what’s the best way to build and maintain a positive and productive mindset?

Many attempt self-motivation with positive thinking, but there’s a much better way to establish a rock solid outlook foundation.  As I have been doing a study of God’s promises in the Bible, two things jump off the pages.

I once thought I was living the American dream.

My father was a successful business man, and while we did not talk about success at home, he lived it every day.  He could not afford college, so he joined the Army at the outset of WWII and became an officer by the war’s end. His definition of success would have been: “Work hard at something you’re proud of to show your kids what success looks like. Don’t talk about it, do it.”

What is success? The dictionary calls it the satisfactory accomplishment of a sought after goal.  As I study success, I’ve noticed that God is seldom included or discussed.

It’s time to celebrate!

I am pleased to announce that Careers With A Purpose is now officially a 501c3 non-profit ministry!

After months of work with an attorney and a bit of a wait on our friends at the Internal Revenue Service, Careers With A Purpose is moving forward with our new non-profit status to provide a faith-based advantage for men and women in every moment of career transition, and to help get America back to work.

Will you partner with us as we move forward?

When our family lived on a cul-de-sac, the neighbors were always close and my children could always play safely in our front yard.  A cul-de-sac home is a great place to be…a cul-de-sac job is not.

Cul-de-sac is a French word, and loosely translated means “dead end” or “impasse”.  Your dead end job may  have you working hard, but circumstances beyond your control are stalling your career goals.  It could be the nature of your position, a boss that wants to hang on to you indefinitely, hiring policies…anything.  Do you really want to devote more years to a job without an upside?

“Discouraged worker”.  That’s what the Department of Labor calls you if you’re no longer collecting unemployment.  If that’s where you are, this is for you.

Let me encourage you to get off the bench and jump back in the game.  Get employed again!  And yes, I can hear you saying, “Why bother, what’s changed”?

I’ve got good news for you discouraged workers, unemployed, underemployed, and unhappily employed.  Government statistics say the hiring picture is looking better for the first time in four years.

interview appointmentLook quick…the frozen job market may be thawing!

The February jobs report is out and the news is more encouraging. The economy is showing signs of life as the reported unemployment rate dropped to 7.7% and employers added 236,000 jobs last month. Spurred by some improvements in housing, auto sales and manufacturing, the economic forecast is a modest 2% growth for 2013.

No, the news is not all good.

Okay, so I’m old school.

I’ve always enjoyed reading a daily newspaper, and my favorite these days is The Wall Street Journal. One day this week, the headlines were all over the board, and all about sudden change.  “Newsweek Quits Print”, “Google Hit by Weak Results”, “Failed Deals Stir Tension With China”, “McDonalds Earnings Fall 4 Percent”.
